Ross Neil:

June 7th - July 2nd 2004

It is clear in this series of works that there is a fundamental and inherent love of painting: from the sheer physical dexterity of creating colour and form, of making marks and inventing landscapes.

Natural beauty and man made scenarios meet in a playful and optimistic view of the world where Man’s impact on the surrounding world is recognised for both its positive and negative factors. Even if at first glance it is hidden, our imprint is always there. Clearly contemporary, Ross utilises and recalls all the skills & pleasures of a traditional landscape painter.

Conversation is, at a first glance, a two dimensional catalogue of birds recalling the Old Masters meticulous paintings of flora and fauna. Here however, avian hierarchy is confused: robins are the size of cats, ducks the size of hamsters. The birds’ plumage is replaced by the flat colours normally associated with corporate liveries; their form in relief implying signage. Wild life as a logo.

Through out this series whilst your eye recognises the subject matter your imagination is drawn into a charming, quirky, romantic world.

Ross Neil graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in 2002 winning the Reynolds Prize which is awarded annually by the Academicians to the student they consider to be the most promising. This new body of work is his first exhibition since graduating.
